Literary Contest

2013 WOTS 5Each year, WOTS features a literary contest based on a theme. First and second-place awards are given in the categories of Fiction, Nonfiction and Poetry.  


The theme for WOTS 30th Anniversary is “Brilliance.”




  • Entrants must be a registered attendee of the 2015 conference. Registration will open in July.

  • Applicants may enter more than one category, but may only submit one entry in fiction, nonfiction and poetry.

  • A $15 fee is required for each entry.

  • Entries must be 1,500 words or less and received by the deadline posted (The deadline will be announced in the conference brochure in June).

  • Material must be original and not previously accepted for publication or production.

  • Conference presenters, steering committee, and persons affiliated with Edmonds Arts Commission are not eligible.

  • Winners are selected by independent judges.

  • First place awards are $100; second place awards are $75. Awards are generously provided by a local sponsor (2012-2014: RBC Wealth Management).

  • Awards are made in consideration of the one-time right of the City of Edmonds to reproduce for educational purposes material submitted.




  • Language and subject matter must be appropriate for the general public and for circulation in the public library.

  • All entries must be typed in a standard copy-style font, 10-12 point size, single spaced lines, and formatted on 8.5x11 white paper with a minimum of 1.25 margins on all sides. Do Not Bind Pages.

  • The author’s name must not appear anywhere on the manuscript. Do include the manuscript title on each page and number the pages.

  • Submit entries, unfolded, in a 9x12 envelope. Include the completed and signed Release and Submission Information Form (below). If submitting more than one entry, you may mail all of them together in one envelope. Each manuscript must have its own Release and Submission Information Form.

  • All entries must be mailed (no electronic submissions) to: WOTS Literary Contest, 700 Main St., Edmonds, WA 98020. FedEx/UPS, etc., is OK.

  • Payment may be made at the time of your online registration, or separately by check submitted with your manuscript.

  • Failure to follow the above rules and instructions may result in disqualification.

  • Contest fees are non-refundable.

  • Entries will not be returned.

  • First and second place awards will be granted in all three categories. A social security number is required by the City of Edmonds for every award recipient in order to process payment. Judges may, but are not required to, announce “Honorable Mention” submissions. Honorable Mentions do not come with an award.
